Sunday Series 5: Wildlife Pond & Natural Balance

For the fifth and final post of our Sunday Series, Our Farm head grower, Adam, reveals how simple wildlife features are creating natural ecosystems across Our Farm.

Over four years ago, we reinstated our wildlife pond, a decision that transformed the biodiversity of our farm. This simple water feature has become a magnet for insects, birds, and wildlife across our land.

The pond's biggest success has been attracting toads that lay down spawn each spring. These toads act as natural pest control by eating the slugs on our raised beds and fields, eliminating the need for any chemical intervention. It's about working with nature, not against it - a philosophy we have highlighted throughout the series.

Our active beehives sit just beyond the pond. Aside from producing the honey featured on our restaurant menus, our bees serve as essential pollinators for both our crops and the wild plants throughout the farm.

It is remarkable to see how one reinstated pond has created a foundation for biodiversity that grows stronger with each season. Sometimes the simplest sustainable practices yield the most notable results.
